Bitter Lemon is all about handcrafted small-batch art and goods for the modern home; Fine art and design, a willingness to learn, colour theory, typography, up-cycling, and asking myself “how can I make that?”.

Inspired by a good DIY project, I have created Bitter Lemon to be a place to pursue my passion, a marketplace to showcase my art and handcrafted goods, but also a makers space. Offering DIY kits, classes, tutorials, and to build a community that celebrates all things arts and crafting — with weekly BYOCraft hangouts at the waterfront.

Currently everything on the site is designed and crafted by me, Kim Hitchman, but with hopes to expand by hosting artists’ works from across Canada.

Proudly Canadian

I am based in Sarnia, with roots in Midland, Ontario. With hopes of expanding to makers and artist Canadian-wide.

My Story

TLDR: Girl likes Art.

To say that Art Attack was a huge part of my origin story would be an understatement; it was an absolute chokehold that Neil Buchanan had on my childhood. His ability to take so little and transform it to art resonated with what I had already taken an interest in at that early age, so watching it allowed me to continue to learn, be creative, and pursue that passion further. Needless to say, I had a very art-centred childhood — reinforced by crafts at home, learning to sew at 10, and doing art contests from a children’s magazine.

Continuing to be inspired by home renovation shows, Project Runway, and literally the set of Neverland in the 1991 movie Hook had 14 year old me drawing my dream home on long sheets of printer paper; I wanted to be an architect, fashion designer, or movie set designer. So, I knew a creative field was mandatory, and this lead me to The University of Ottawa studying Visual Arts. But, pumping out so many art projects simultaneously, during a tight time frame was not something I enjoyed, so I changed my degree and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in the History and Theory of Art.

Fast forward to present day, feeling burnt out and working jobs that I wasn’t passionate about; I was daydreaming this idea of my own art business. I am so excited to begin this journey, thank you for stopping by!
